Faculty


A committed international faculty of professors and industry experts share their knowledge with Executive MBA students,identifying the latest in business research, trends and insight.

Faculty who teach in the Executive MBA program are selected for their practical business experience as well as for their academic leadership. Many consult to business and government, and make significant contributions to international academic and industry organizations. In addition, they are adept at teaching adult learners, and many professors have earned distinguished teaching awards and other accolades.


NEIL ABRAMSON, BA, MA, MBA, PHD

Neil Abramson is an Associate Professor whose research and specialization interests include strategies for international business; cross-cultural management and decision making; doing business in China, Southeast Asia and the US; and international organizational theory. Neil is a supervisor for the Applied Strategic Analysis Project.

GEORGE W. BLAZENKO, BA, MA, PHD

George Blazenko, Associate Professor, teaches the Financial Management course in the Executive MBA Program. His recent publication, "Corporate Leverage and the Distribution of Common Share Returns", is forthcoming in the Journal of Business Finance and Accounting.

EDWARD BUKSZAR JR., BA, MBA, PHD

Ed Bukszar Jr. is an Associate Professor of Strategic Management at SFU and teaches the Strategic Management and Project Supervision courses in the Executive MBA program. He has published articles in numerous journals in the areas of strategy and decision-making. He has consulted, mostly for high tech companies, in Vancouver and around the world. Ed has twice won the Canada Trust Distinguished Teaching Award.

GERVASE R. BUSHE, BA, PHD

Associate Professor Gervase Bushe is a leading organization development scholar in Canada; his work on organizational change is cited in all contemporary organization development texts. Gervase has an extensive consulting practice working with executives in the areas of leadership development, organizational change, team dynamics and organizational culture. In the Executive MBA program, he teaches Leadership and Group Development.

JOHN CAMPBELL, BCOMM, CFA, MBA

John Campbell is an Adjunct Professor in entrepreneurial studies. John teaches the elective course, "Managing New Ventures" in the Executive MBA program. Co-founder of CWC Capital Ltd./LP, a regional investment banking firm that focuses on serving private companies, John is a CA whose expertise covers all aspects of entrepreneurial ventures.

ALAIN C.B. DUNCAN, BA, MBA, CA

Alain Duncan is a Senior Lecturer on Financial and Managerial Accounting in the Executive MBA program. Alain, a professional accountant, is a two-time winner of the Canada Trust Distinguished Teachers Award. Prior to joining the SFU faculty, Alain was CFO for two Canadian corporations, acted as examiner for the Certified Management Accountants Society of BC, as well as instructing review courses for the CGA and CPA designations.

CAROLYN P. EGRI, BCOMM, MSC, PHD

Carolyn Egri is Associate Professor of Management and Organization Studies and teaches Organizational Studies for the Executive MBA program. Carolyn is a former director of the Vancouver Folk Music Festival Society and the Organizational Behavior Teaching Society. She has extensive experience as a human resource management professional and has worked as a consultant to industry.

MICHAEL FOGEL, JD, LLB, MED

Michael Fogel is an Adjunct Professor who teaches the elective course Negotiation/Conflict Resolution in the Executive MBA Program. Michael, in private practice since 1985, is a Chartered Mediator, facilitator and negotiation/conflict resolution educator and strategist. He also designs and presents negotiation, mediation and leadership programs for judges, lawyers, health care professionals and various public and private sector corporations.

ANDREW GEMINO, MA, MBA, PHD

Andrew Gemino is an Assistant Professor of Management Information Systems. He is a founder of a company that develops commercial software used by professional sports teams in the NHL and NBA, as well as automated employee scheduling for sports and entertainment companies. Andrew's teaching awards include the Canada Trust Distinguished Teacher Award, the MBA Program Teaching Excellence Award and the PhD Student Teaching Excellence Award. He teaches the Analytical Review and IT courses in the Executive MBA program.

THOMAS B. LAWRENCE, BCOMM, PHD

Tom Lawrence is an Associate Professor and the Weyerhaeuser Professor of Change Management. He has taught extensively in the areas of organizational change, strategic management, and business and society. As a consultant, Tom has worked with numerous clients in the public, private and voluntary sectors to facilitate their strategy development processes and his research has been published in a variety of journals. Tom teaches the elective course Managing Corporate Change in the Executive MBA program.

ELICIA MAINE, BSC, BA, SM, PHD

Elicia Maine is Assistant Professor of Policy Analysis as well as Educational Coordinator for New Ventures BC. Maine’s current research focuses on the dynamics of innovation in small and medium-sized enterprises in the materials industry, and on investment in nanomaterials.

IAN P. MCCARTHY, BENG, MSC, PHD, CENG, MIMECHE

Ian McCarthy is an Associate Professor of Management of Technology. Ian is a qualified chartered engineer, a member of the EPSRC College (a UK research council) and a director of the Complexity Society. Ian's work focuses on technology-based organizations and includes projects such as managing operational complexity, developing mass customization strategies, modeling decision making in new product development and classifying drug discovery strategies. Ian is a supervisor for the Applied Strategic Analysis Project.

MARK A. MOORE, PHD

Mark Moore is a lecturer teaching the Business and Government course in the Executive MBA program. Prior to joining SFU, he taught economics at Barnard College, Columbia University, and Colgate University. At the Bank of Canada in Ottawa, Mark conducted research on monetary policy, international portfolio and direct investment flows, and options pricing methods.

MICHAEL PARENT, BCOMM, MBA, PHD

Michael Parent is an Associate Professor who teaches the Information Technology and Organizational Transformation course in the Executive MBA program. His specialization and research interests are in the areas of e-commerce, group support systems, eGovernment, IT governance, IT leadership, Internet security, data warehousing and telecommunications. Michael is Academic Director for the SFU Business Management of Technology MBA and Specialist MBA programs.

LEYLAND PITT, BCOMM, MBA, PHD, MC

Professor Pitt has extensive international teaching experience in the UK, Europe, North America, South Africa and Australia. He is regularly cited in scholarly journals as well as in many of the leading marketing text books. Recipient of numerous awards for teaching as well as his published work, Leyland teaches Marketing Strategy in the Executive MBA program.

KAREN RUCKMAN, BSC, MA, PHD

Karen Ruckman is Assistant Professor of Strategy and Policy in the Faculty of Business Administration. Her research focus is on strategic international business issues, technology spillovers, multinational location choice, and mode of entry into a foreign market within the biotechnology/pharmaceutical, financial goods and forest products industries. Ruckman teaches Managerial Economics.

RICHARD SCHWINDT, BA, PHD

Richard Schwindt holds a joint appointment as an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics and in the Faculty of Business Administration. He has authored or co-authored six books and numerous academic articles. Richard is a supervisor for the Applied Strategic Analysis Project. He has designed and delivered MBA courses for the Helsinki School of Economics and Business.

DANIEL M. SHAPIRO, BA, MA, PHD

Professor Daniel Shapiro is the Dennis F. Culver Executive MBA Alumni Professor. He teaches Managerial Economics in the Executive MBA program. He has published extensively on the determinants of corporate performance, industrial structure and public policy. Danny has also designed and delivered executive programs to managers in the private and public sectors, in Canada and abroad. He was awarded the Canada Trust Excellence in Teaching Award in 1995 and 2002.

JILL SHEPPARD, BSC, DIC, MBA , PHD

Jill Sheppard is Assistant Professor of Management. Her research focuses on how managers of technology-based firms can learn to help the organizations they work within become ?and remain ?innovative. She is a supervisor for the Applied Strategic Analysis Project.

CAROLYNE F. SMART, BCOMM, MBA, PHD

Carolyne Smart is Associate Dean, Graduate Studies for SFU Business and an Associate Professor of Business Strategy. Her focus is strategic analysis and planning, and implementing strategic change. In the Executive MBA program she teaches Business Strategy. Carolyne's research has been published in some of the top academic journals and she consults for a variety of organizations helping them to develop and implement new strategies.

DAVID C. THOMAS, BS, MBA, PHD

David C. Thomas is Professor of International Management at SFU Business. David has published extensively and conducts focused research on the interaction of individuals from different cultures within organizational settings. For the Executive MBA program, David teaches International Business and will be leading the international business trip for Executive MBA students to New Zealand in 2004.

ROSALIE TUNG, BA, MBA, PHD, FRS(C)

Rosalie Tung teaches International Business in the Executive MBA program and holds the Ming and Stella Wong Chaired Professorship. Elected from over 13,000 of her peers worldwide, Tung has served as Vice President, President and is current past-President of the Academy of Management 2000-2005. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a Fellow of the Academy of Management, and a Fellow of the Academy of International Business.

WILLIAM WEDLEY, BCOMM, MBA, PHD

Bill Wedley is Professor of Operations Management and teaches the Data and Decision-Making course in the Executive MBA program. Bill's research is in the area of multiple criteria decision making, with particular emphasis on the Analytic Hierarchy Process. His numerous publications have appeared in leading journals on decision analysis, operations research and small business management.

MARK N. WEXLER, BA, MA, PHD

Mark Wexler is Professor of Human Resource Management at SFU and Executive Director of the Perimeter Group of Ethics Consultants. Mark teaches the Structure and Change in Organizations course in the Executive MBA program. His published work has appeared in four books and over 75 periodicals. He sits on editorial boards for three academic bodies, the board of directors of two not-for-profit organizations and the advisory council of a trade association. He has consulted for diverse organizations in the public and private sectors.
